Gino Struffaldi, a 1932 combatant, on the change of the name of the 9 de Julho Tunnel:
"It was not ignored that Dr. Daher Elias Cutait (present name of the tunnel) had been a revolutionary at the age 19. ... The idea is not to diminish his name, but pay homage to him in an appropriate place and not as an usurper of the name 9 de Julho Tunnel."
The change of names was made by the mayoress Marta Suplicy, nobody knows why, in 2001, in one more movement that erases history. Also according to Mr. Struffaldi, in an article in the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo today, the original name is a reference to the Mantiqueira Tunnel, the bloodiest episode of the fight of 1932. Of course he is right. Nothing is preserved in São Paulo. Not even names.
