September 1, 1939
W. H. Auden

I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odour of death
Offends the September night.

Accurate scholarship can
Unearth the whole offence
From Luther until now
That has driven a culture mad,
Find what occurred at Linz,
What huge imago made
A psychopathic god:
I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.

Exiled Thucydides knew
All that a speech can say
About Democracy,
And what dictators do,
The elderly rubbish they talk
To an apathetic grave;
Analysed all in his book,
The enlightenment driven away,
The habit-forming pain,
Mismanagement and grief:
We must suffer them all again.

Into this neutral air
Where blind skyscrapers use
Their full height to proclaim
The strength of Collective Man,
Each language pours its vain
Competitive excuse:
But who can live for long
In an euphoric dream;
Out of the mirror they stare,
Imperialism's face
And the international wrong.

Faces along the bar
Cling to their average day:
The lights must never go out,
The music must always play,
All the conventions conspire
To make this fort assume
The furniture of home;
Lest we should see where we are,
Lost in a haunted wood,
Children afraid of the night
Who have never been happy or good.

The windiest militant trash
Important Persons shout
Is not so crude as our wish:
What mad Nijinsky wrote
About Diaghilev
Is true of the normal heart;
For the error bred in the bone
Of each woman and each man
Craves what it cannot have,
Not universal love
But to be loved alone.

From the conservative dark
Into the ethical life
The dense commuters come,
Repeating their morning vow;
"I will be true to the wife,
I'll concentrate more on my work,"
And helpless governors wake
To resume their compulsory game:
Who can release them now,
Who can reach the deaf,
Who can speak for the dumb?

All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

The days are beautiful
The days are beautiful.

I know what days are.
The other is weather.

I know what weather is.
The days are beautiful.

Things are incidental.
Someone is weeping.

I weep for the incidental.
The days are beautiful.

Where is tomorrow?
Everyone will weep.

Tomorrow was yesterday.
The days are beautiful.

Tomorrow was yesterday.
Today is weather.

The sound of the weather
Is everyone weeping.

Everyone is incidental.
Everyone weeps.

The tears of today
Will put out tomorrow.

The rain is ashes.
The days are beautiful.

The rain falls down.
The sound is falling.

The sky is a cloud.
The days are beautiful.

The sky is dust.
The weather is yesterday.

The weather is yesterday.
The sound is weeping.

What is this dust?
The weather is nothing.

The days are beautiful.
The towers are yesterday.

The towers are incidental.
What are these ashes?

Here is the hate
That does not travel.

Here is the robe
That smells of the night

Here are the words
Retired to their books

Here are the stones
Loosed from their settings

Here is the bridge
Over the water

Here is the place
Where the sun came up

Here is a season
Dry in the fireplace.

Here are the ashes.
The days are beautiful.

Facing It
Yusef Komunyakaa

My black face fades,
hiding inside the black granite.
I said I wouldn't,
dammit: No tears.
I'm stone. I'm flesh.
My clouded reflection eyes me
like a bird of prey, the profile of night
slanted against morning. I turn
this way--the stone lets me go.
I turn that way--I'm inside
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
again, depending on the light
to make a difference.
I go down the 58,022 names,
half-expecting to find
my own in letters like smoke.
I touch the name Andrew Johnson;
I see the booby trap's white flash.
Names shimmer on a woman's blouse
but when she walks away
the names stay on the wall.
Brushstrokes flash, a red bird's
wings cutting across my stare.
The sky. A plane in the sky.
A white vet's image floats
closer to me, then his pale eyes
look through mine. I'm a window.
He's lost his right arm
inside the stone. In the black mirror
a woman's trying to erase names:
No, she's brushing a boy's hair.

Go Back
Toquato Neto

Você me chama
Eu quero ir pro cinema
você reclama
meu coração não contenta
você me ama
mas de repente a madrugada mudou
e certamente
aquele trem já passou
e se passou
passou daqui pra melhor,
foi!

Só quero saber
do que pode dar certo
não tenho tempo a perder

você me pede
quer ir pro cinema
agora é tarde
se nenhuma espécie
de pedido
eu escutar agora
agora é tarde
tempo perdido
mas se você não mora, não morou
é porque não tem ouvido
que agora é tarde
- eu tenho dito -
o nosso amor michou
(que pena) o nosso amor, amor
e eu não estou a fim de ver cinema
(que pena)

Aging
George Carlin

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids?

If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.
"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!"
You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five!
That's the key.
You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back.
You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead."How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!"
You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16!
And then the greatest day of your life . . you become 21.
Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!
But then you turn 30.
Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk!
He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're just a sour-dumpling.
What's wrong? What's changed?
You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40.
Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away.
Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.
But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!
So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.
You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70!
After that it's a day-by-day thing;
you HIT Wednesday!
You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle;
you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime.
And it doesn't end there.
Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92"
Then a strange thing happens.
If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again "I'm 100 and a half!"
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them".
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, music, art, stock, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love them, at every opportunity. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Delírios II

Alquimia do Verbo
Rimbaud

Para mim. A história das minhas loucuras.

Há muito me gabava de possuir
todas as paisagens possíveis, e julgava irrisórias
- A negro
E branco, I vermelho, O azul, U verde.
Regulava a forma e o movimento de
cada consoante, e , com ritmos institivos,
me vangloriava de ter inventado um
verbo poético acessível, um dia ou outro,
a todos os sentidos. Era comigo traduzí-los.
Foi primeiro um experimento.
Escrevia silêncios, noites, anotava o inexprimível.
Fixava vertigens.

Affirmation
Donald Hall

To grow old is to lose everything.
Aging, everybody knows it.
Even when we are young,
we glimpse it sometimes, and nod our heads
when a grandfather dies.
Then we row for years on the midsummer
pond, ignorant and content. But a marriage,
that began without harm, scatters
into debris on the shore,
and a friend from school drops
cold on a rocky strand.
If a new love carries us
past middle age, our wife will die
at her strongest and most beautiful.
New women come and go. All go.
The pretty lover who announces
that she is temporary
is temporary. The bold woman,
middle-aged against our old age,
sinks under an anxiety she cannot withstand.
Another friend of decades estranges himself
in words that pollute thirty years.
Let us stifle under mud at the pond's edge
and affirm that it is fitting
and delicious to lose everything.

Miojo

Vira-lata

Sergio Pinheiro Lopes

Vira-lata desta cidade que sou,
Que me é,
Não vi
Botarem os parques e as igrejas
Atrás das grades.
Amante da beleza ou
Alma aflita,
Agora tenho horário de visita.
Sou ambos de repente.
Não mais flores roubadas
De um jardim, para uma amada.
Não mais madrugadas
Em bancos de parques
Olhando as estrelas por entre
O bordado das copas das árvores.
Agora apenas o olho comprido
Desde as calçadas,
Tristonho e solidário,
Altivas como altares,
Às solitárias,
Seguras e tristes
Rosas trancadas.

Fair Play

Ainda existe fair play!

After the care, the Ajax player tried to give back the ball and, unitentionally, made a goal, because the goalkeeper was too advanced.
All, including the unfortunate scorer, were uttely embarrassed, but there was nothing to be done and the goal was validated by the referee.
When the game restarted, the Ajax players did not move, allowing the RKC Waalwijk player to score a goal. Fair play still exists!

Funeral Blues

W. H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.

For nothing now can ever come to any good.
***
Funeral Blues
W. H. Auden

Rabiscando no céu a mensagem Ele Está Morto,

Meu meio-dia, minha meia-noite, minha conversa, minha canção,

As estrelas não são benvindas mais: apaguem cada uma delas;
Empacotem a lua e desmontem o sol;
Esvaziem o oceano e varram as florestas;

What P
uzzles Me
Sergio Pinheiro Lopes

What puzzles me is the truth.

The truth takes friends away
And offends the acquaintances.

It hurts deep, pains the heart,
Mists the eyes, blocks the throat.

The truth comes in a slant,
does not clarify nor illuminates.
The truth assassinates.

The truth are round eyes
gazing at the void.

Um aristocrata dos trópicos,
de boas maneiras e educado,
embora não de modo formal;
que deveria ficar longe do álcool;
que não deveria encher ouvidos
desprevenidos com falas
severas, melhor se não ditas;
primando na língua e na cultura
de seus antepassados, ao menos
quatro gerações já idas,
ele caminha e ultrapassa os anos:
pérola falsa entre legítimos suínos.

Self-Portrait
Sergio Pinheiro Lopes

An aristocrat from the tropics,
mild of manner and educated,

albeit not formally;
who should be kept away from alcohol
not to flood unprepared
ears with harsh observations
usually best left unsaid;
excelling in the language and culture

of his forefathers, at least
four generations removed,
he walks and lives:

a fake pearl amidst real swine.

Capoeira do Arnaldo
Paulo Vanzolini

Quando eu vim da minha terra
Passei na enchente nadando
Passei frio, passei fome
Passei dez dias chorando
Por saber que de tua vida
Pra sempre estava passando
Nos passos desse calvário
Tinha ninguém me ajudando
Eu tava como um passarinho
Perdido fora do bando

Vamos nos embora, iê
Vamos nos embora, camará
Por esse mundo afora, iê
Por esse mundo afora, camará

Quando eu vim de minha terra
Veja o que eu deixei pra trás:
Cinco noivas sem marido
Sete crianças sem pai
Doze santos sem milagre
Quinze suspiros sem ai
Trinta maridos contentes
Me perguntando “já vai?”
O padre dizendo as beatas
Milagre custa mas sai

Vamos nos embora, iê
Vamos nos embora, camará
Por esse mundo afora, iê
Por esse mundo afora, camará

Quando eu vim de minha terra
Não sabia o que é sobroço
Sabença de burro velho
Coragem de tigre moço
Oração de fechar corpo
Pendurada no pescoço
Rifle do papo amarelo
Peixeira cabo de osso
Medalha de Padre Çiço
E rosário de caroço
Pra me alisar pêlo fino
Pra arrepiar pêlo grosso
Eu saí de minha terra
Sem cisma, susto ou sobroço

Vamos nos embora, iê
Vamos nos embora, camará
Por esse mundo afora, iê
Por esse mundo afora, camará

Quando eu vim de minha terra
Vim fazendo tropelia
Nos lugares que eu passava
Estrada ficava vazia
Quem vinha vindo, voltava
Quem ia indo, não ia
Quem tinha negócio urgente
Deixava pro outro dia
Padre largava da missa
Onça largava da cria
Os pais de moça donzela
Mudava de freguesia
Mas tinha que fazer força
Porque as moças não queria

Vamos nos embora, iê
Vamos nos embora, camará
Por esse mundo afora, iê
Por esse mundo afora, camará

Eu saí de minha terra
Por ter sina viajeira
Com dois meses de viagem
Eu vivi uma vida inteira
Saí brabo, cheguei manso
Macho da mesma maneira
A estrada foi boa mestra
Me deu lição verdadeira
Coragem não tá no grito
Nem riqueza na gibeira
E os pecados de domingo
Quem paga, morena,
É segunda-feira

Vamos nos embora, iê
Vamos nos embora, camará
Por esse mundo afora, iê
Por esse mundo afora, camará
