O que podemos esperar?
Bem sei que muitas cidades e sociedades passaram por essa violência e banditismo político e certamente muitas outras passarão. A Chicago dos anos 30, NY dos setenta, para não falar do Velho Oeste (lá deles) e o nosso Velho Norte, a Inglaterra de Francis Drake e por aí vai.
Se olharmos um pouco mais de cima, no entanto, veremos que todos os indicadores de qualidade de vida melhoraram ao redor do mundo nos últimos cem anos. É fato. Até os países mais miseráveis da África melhoraram seus indicadores de expectativa de vida e de mortes por mil nascimentos. Também esse estado de coisas há de passar por aqui. Sabemos que notícia, quase sempre, é notícia ruim. E isso nos assusta; introduz um viés no nosso olhar. Mas a intensa atividade vital das cidades e do país continua todo o tempo. A sociedade pensa em si mesma continuamente através de seus milhões de habitantes. Cada um contribuindo com seu pouquinho no seu cotidiano. O que falta é massa crítica para uma mudança visível na forma de cobrança de direitos através da organização da população. Mas ela virá. O Bolsa-Família do Lula é o Plano Real dele e deve reelegê-lo. As pessoas votam com os estômagos e com os bolsos. Corrupção sempre houve, em todos os governos, e a população sabe disso instintivamente, pois convive com ela e dela participa, porque senão não toca a vida pra frente. Então se acomoda, aceita. 'Faz parte', ouve-se por aí. Mas as pessoas trabalham, estudam, têm valores, ambições e desejos que são irrealizáveis na atual condição da sociedade brasileira. No fundo não concordam com a corrupção e, quando tiverem o tempo, a educação e informação de boa qualidade (e vão acabar tendo, pois por isso já brigam), vão se mover para acabar com ela, colocá-la dentro de limites mais civilizados. Por isso as cidades e o país vão mudar, tenham certeza. Aos poucos, infelizmente, mas é assim com tudo na vida: um 'cadinho' por dia. Cabe a cada um de nós, no mínimo, comportar-nos como achamos que todos deveriam se comportar idealmente. Só isso já é muito difícil, mas por aí também começa alguma mudança. Sei que é a estória de que se cada chinês varresse a porta de sua casa, a China seria um país limpo. Mas é verdade. Além disso e enquanto isso, repito, a sociedade e seus milhões de anônimos se movimentam.
Eppur si muove, caros poetas, eppur si muove, e o país é bem maior do que Lula ou Alckmin.
Eles passarão e o Brasil não.

What can we expect?
I well know that many cities and societies have gone through this violence and political banditry and certainly many others will. Chicago of the 30s, NY of the 70s, not to mention the Far West (in the US) and our Far North, England of Francis Drake and so on and so forth.
If we look from a little higher up, however, we will see that all quality of life indicators have improved around the world over the last one hundred years. It's a fact. Even the most miserable countries in Africa have improved their life expectancy and their deaths by one thousand births. Also here this state of affairs shall pass. We know that news, almost always, means bad news. And this scares us; it introduces a bias in our way of looking at things. But the intense vital activity of the cities and of the country goes on all the time. Society thinks of itself continually through its millions of inhabitants. Each person contributes a little in his or her daily life. What is lacking is critical mass for a visible change in the way people demand their rights through the organized population. But it will come. Lula's Family-Grant is his Real Plan and will probably reelect him. People vote with their stomachs and their pockets. There has always been corruption, in all administrations, and the population knows this instinctively, because it lives with it and participates on it, otherwise they can't move on with their lives. Consequently it accommodates, accepts it. 'Comes with the territory', you hear people say. But people work, study, have values, ambitions and desires that are impossible to realize in the present state of Brazilian society. At heart they disagree with corruption and, when they have the time, the education and good quality information (and they'll end up by having them, because they are already fighting for it), they will move to put an end to it, to put it within more civilized limits. For these reasons the cities and the country will change, be sure of that. Slowly, unfortunately, but this is such with everything in life: a little a day. It is up to each of us, in the very least, to behave as we believe all should behave ideally. This alone is very difficult in itself, but changes also begin so. I know it is the story that if each Chinese swept his front door, China would be a clean country. But it is true. Besides this and meanwhile, I repeat, society and its millions of anonymous persons are on the move.
