Termópilas

Constantinos Cavafy
(Tradução de José Paulo Paes)

Honra àqueles que Termópilas fixaram
em suas vidas para as defender.
Que, jamais se furtando à obrigação,
foram justos e retos nos seus atos,
mas condoídos, também, e compassivos;
generosos, quando ricos; quando pobres,
generosos ainda com seu pouco,
socorrendo a quem pudessem; proclamando
sempre a verdade, embora sem nutrir
ódio algum por aqueles que mentissem.

E de mais honra serão merecedores
se previram (como tantos o fizeram)
que Efialte finalmente há de surgir,
e que os medas finalmente passarão.

Thermopylae
Constantinos Cavafy
(Translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard)

Honor to those who in the life they lead
define and guard a Thermopylae.
Never betraying what is right,
consistent and just in all they do
but showing pity also, and compassion;
generous when they are rich, and when they are poor,
still generous in small ways,
still helping as much as they can;
always speaking the truth,
yet without hating those who lie.

And even more honor is due to them
when they foresee (as many do foresee)
that in the end Ephialtes will make his appearance,
that the Medes will break through after all.
