Padrão

O esforço é grande e o homem pequeno.
Eu, Diogo Cão, navegador, deixei
Este padrão ao pé do areal moreno
E para deante naveguei.

A alma é divina e a obra é imperfeita.
Este padrão signala ao vento e aos céus
Que, da obra ousada, é minha a parte feita:
O por-fazer é só com Deus.

E ao imenso e possível oceano
Ensinam estas Quinas, que aqui vês,
Que o mar com fim será grego ou romano:
O mar sem fim é portuguez.

E a cruz ao alto diz que o que me há na alma
E faz febre em mim de navegar
Só encontrará de deus na eterna calma
O porto sempre por achar.

and came to live
where I was born
she decided we'd sleep
in my old nursery
and I was closer love
than dinky toys
her happiness traced
the wallpaper
of my dreams
mickey mouse and daffy duck
and our hearts beat
like tin drums
together in a castle
with cavalry and indians
soldiers and cannon guns
love
and within her
I felt that she
had always been there
living behind the wallpaper
guiding the tenderness
of days
until toys were tossed
in a corner.
and love played games
with childhood dreams.
