Nasci um ano antes do Quarto Centenário. Foi quando inauguraram o Ibirapuera. Havia barcos a remo e a motor no lago para passear e um restaurante ao lado do deck. Ia-se a pé por ruas de sibipirunas e tipuanas. Os Jardins podiam ser chamados de Pomares: havia ruas com jabuticabeiras, amoreiras, pés-de-café (tinha um na frente de casa) e muitas outras.
As pajens - era assim que chamavam - andavam com os carrinhos de bebê nas praças, os táxis e os telefones eram pretos, os guardas-civis vestiam uniforme azul e usavam luvas brancas e dava para jogar bola na Rua Estados Unidos. No centro da Praça das Guianas havia uma árvore imensa e quando eu era menino dava para ficar contando os carros que passavam na 9 de Julho. Era lá que passava a parada de 7 de Setembro e no carnaval havia corso na Avenida Brasil.
O Harmonia não era clube de gente metida e a Rua Canadá inundava em dia de chuva. O Morumbi não existia. A cidade acabava lá pelo Jockey Club, depois era o pasto. Hoje ando como alma penada nessa minha cidade, arrancando pedaços de memória das poucas casas que restaram, de um quebradinho na calçada, de uma ou outra árvore. Meu tio Julinho parava o carro naquela esquina quando vinha tomar lanche no domingo e a Casa América tinha o melhor sorvete de pistache do mundo. O primeiro supermercado da cidade chamava-se Sirvase e era na Rua Augusta. Um pouco mais para cima havia o Cine Paulista e a primeira lanchonete que só vendia Hot-Dog com fritas e Hot Fudge Nut. Ia para o cinema, para a escola, para o clube, para visitar minha avó, tudo de bonde. Depois veio o ônibus elétrico que fazia hmmmmmmm quando acelerava. A Praça das Bandeiras chamava O Piques e a Rua Direita era torta. O Cine Marrocos era o mais aconchegante e a Salada Paulista, na Avenida Ipiranga, era restaurante de gente educada. Comia-se bem. Tinha a Praça da República e flores no Largo do Arouche - acho que ainda tem. As meninas do Externato Meira eram as mais galinhas e o Consulado Americano ficava no Conjunto Nacional, aquele, que tinha o relógio da Willys (Overland do Brasil). Ao crioulo que fazia as entregas da Mercearia Vera chamava-se Sagüi e todo dia era possível cruzar com o escocês e seu coolie. O tempo era nublado e sempre garoava. A cidade era mais fria e as pessoas mais quentes. Dormia-se de janela aberta e meu cachorro Paddy andava solto. Todo mundo conhecia. Todas as ruas eram de paralelepípedos e esses meus cabelos brancos são apenas um disfarce, nunca cresci: continuo menino e continuo contando os carros.
Hoje é aniversário de São Paulo.

Rei David.
Eu o chamo assim porque, à maneira de um bom rei, que tudo sabe do seu reino, o David conhece tudo e a todos neste bairro. Qualquer coisa que uma pessoa necessite, de um bom mecânico para um carro importado, passando por um excelente tapeceiro, até o pedreiro perfeito para fazer aquele conserto necessário na casa de alguém; para todos os problemas ele invariavelmente recomenda o profissional perfeito.
O bar que freqüentamos tem uma quota desproporcional de pessoas de personalidade, se comparado com outros bares de esquina. Apelidos todos têm. Nem todos dados por mim e nem todos adotados pelos demais, mas os adotei para meu consumo pessoal, para chamá-los de acordo com sua personalidade.
Há o Alair, que chamo de Alá, meu bom Alá, o acima mencionado Rei David, o Comandante Cleber, o Capitán, Master Berger, o Conde Frescobaldi, o Sagüi e, até eu mesmo, às vezes chamado de Argentino, por conta de umas viagens ao país vizinho, ou de Frango de Macumba, apelido este dado pelo Sagüi e, este sim, adotado por todos. Quando querem me cutucar, é claro.
Há também aquele a quem ninguém ousa dar apelido: Seu Tavares. Este o sábio inconteste do lugar. Homem de refinada educação e vida mais do que rica e interessante, é escutado e reverenciado por todos. Por ser dono de vasta cultura e ponderado em todos os assuntos, é autoridade indiscutível.
Mas de volta ao nosso Rei David.
Estávamos todos a conversar em um prosaico fim de tarde, quando o Rei David entra, vai direto para a caixa de força e, sem nenhuma palavra, desliga a chave geral.
Surpresa. Cala a TV, apagam-se as luzes e desligam-se as geladeiras.
Impassível, ele, munido de suas ferramentas, que esse é um eletricista de primeira, dirige-se para a parte de dentro do balcão e começa a consertar o display que mantém aquecidas as coxinhas, esfihas e os outros acepipes a disposição dos fregueses. Todo o processo não durou, talvez, mais do que dez minutos. Uma vez resolvido o problema, como não poderia deixar de ser, voltou à caixa de força e religou o bar.
Ninguém deu um piu, pois o Rei David é destes que quando vê uma coisa que precisa ser feita ou consertada, não adia, vai, resolve e pronto.
Taí. Depois desse dia passei a prestar mais atenção no personagem. Além da excelência no que faz, e de conhecer e indicar todos os que são os melhores em seus campos de atuação, o Rei David entende de muitas coisas. Não é incomum vê-lo dar uma opinião abalizada sobre os mais diferentes assuntos. É um homem modesto que não se dá ares, mas é pessoa atenta, de bom coração, sempre solidária e de finíssima inteligência.
Como deveriam ser os reis.

Ele está comigo há várias décadas. Já não mais em uso, pois o chá agora vem em saquinhos, cousas do progresso. Mas ele ocupa lugar cativo na cristaleira do meu coração.
Porque ele não é um bule qualquer, tem uma história de vida bem simpática, a qual me faz bem quando dela me lembro.
Tudo começou com um bolo de banana. Um momento! Já vou explicar tudo. Juarez Rubens havia alugado seu apartamento da Rua José Maria Lisboa para um casal de escoceses, recém chegados. Contou-me que tinham um menino regulando com o Sergio e que não conheciam ninguém aqui. Será que eu poderia fazer uma visitinha amiga para a desterrada? Claro que assenti com prazer e, num dia que achei propício, fiz um lindo bolo de bananas (na verdade uma ‘cuca’ de bananas) e lá fui empunhando o dito cujo, o Sergio a tiracolo, cumprir meu dever de cidadã.
Lá chegando, toquei a campainha e... nada de resposta. Insisti e na terceira campainhada surgiu uma escocesa com um escocesinho do lado, com uma cara mais do que desconsolada. Apresente-me, falei amabilidades e entreguei o presente. Aí fui eu a surpreendida, com a mais anti-escocesa das reações – a moça começou a chorar segurando o bolo e eu, para melhorar o ambiente, esclareci – é de bananas, bem brasileira, para lhes desejar boas vindas! O pranto redobrou, todo mundo de pé, na maior semgraceza.
Finalmente ela recuperou a fala e como eu falava em inglês, começou a explicar-se:
Mrs. Lopes desculpe meu outburst, mas foi tudo tão inesperado! Imagine a senhora que hoje é aniversário do meu filhinho e ele estava tristíssimo quando a sra. chegou. E, além do mais, ele é louco por tudo que leva bananas e, quando vi a sra. Com esse bolo não mão, a emoção foi demais...
Clareado o ambiente, entramos e ela foi fazer chá (o qual foi servido no tal bule verde). A prosa esquentou e, uma hora mais tarde voltamos para casa, deixando uma escocesinha e seu rebento mais que felizes e risonhos com a promessa de nos encontrarmos em breve. Claro que eu e Sergio estávamos nos sentindo a moderna versão do “bom samaritano”.
Pearl (esse seu nome), ficou assídua de minha casa e foi um divertimento ver o Peter se integrando na bagunça familiar brasileira.
Ficamos todos amicíssimos...
Passados uns dois anos, ao terem de voltar à Grã-Bretanha, tivemos um chá de despedida, ao término do qual, Pearl se levantou solene, declarando: Júlia, você foi a amiga melhor que já tive e quero lhe dar como lembrança uma cousa que amo muito – empunhando o bule vazio, disse-me comovida – este bule foi minha mãe que me deu quando me casei. Quero que fique com você, para se lembrar deste trecho do caminho que andamos juntas. Entregou-me o presente e me deixou sensibilizada, pois realmente gostava dela...
E o bule naturalizou-se brasileiro e foi largamente usado e apreciado por um bom número de anos.
Nunca mais soube de Pearl, mas ela mora na minha saudade, sempre que olho para o tal bule verde...
Nem poderia ser de outra maneira, não é mesmo?
Este retalhinho colorido de verde realçou a colcha de retalhos que tem sido minha longa existência.

Rev Lowery: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far along the way, thou who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee. Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand -- true to thee, O God, and true to our native land.
We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day. We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.
For we know that, Lord, you're able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor or the least of these and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.
We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that, yes, we can work together to achieve a more perfect union. And while we have sown the seeds of greed -- the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.
And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.
And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.
Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little, angelic Sasha and Malia.
We go now to walk together, children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone, with your hands of power and your heart of love.

We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.
For we know that, Lord, you're able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor or the least of these and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.
We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that, yes, we can work together to achieve a more perfect union. And while we have sown the seeds of greed -- the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.
And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.
And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.
Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little, angelic Sasha and Malia.
We go now to walk together, children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone, with your hands of power and your heart of love.

turning the pages of an album of photographs-
you up on a pony or blowing out candles in a conic hat.
How about a short animated film, a slide presentation?
Your life expressed in an essay, or in one model photograph?
Wouldn't any form be better than this sudden flash?
Your whole existence going off in your face
in an eyebrow-singeing explosion of biography-
nothing like the three large volumes you envisioned.
Survivors would have us believe in a brilliance
here, some bolt of truth forking across the water,
an ultimate Light before all the lights go out,
dawning on you with all its megalithic tonnage.
But if something does flash before your eyes
as you go under, it will probably be a fish,
a quick blur of curved silver darting away,
having nothing to do with your life or your death.
The tide will take you, or the lake will accept it all
